Kohr Crowned Second Summer Slam Contender
Another Big Bobby’s Summer Slam weekend brought another battle with the weather, which has become an all-too-familiar theme during this wet summer. The good news is that we were able to complete our entire Saturday program—including the main events, Golf Cart Race, and Practice Tree Race—before steady rain washed out Sunday’s racing.
Our first winner of the day came in Junior Dragsters, where Gavin Hill defeated Ella Kershner to claim the second Junior Dragster Summer Slam Mini Belt.
An exciting day of racing followed, highlighted by an MVP-worthy performance from Kyle Kohr. Kohr reached two final rounds and nearly found himself racing against his own entry in the Mini Belt Runoff for Championship Contender status.
Driving his Barracuda, Kohr advanced to the $2K Pro final against the ever-tough Mike Fornwalt. Kohr gained a .005 advantage at the starting line with a .008 reaction time. Fornwalt was .013 up front and dead-on his dial with a seven for a .020 total package, while Kohr ran one above his dial to post a .019 package and earn the .001 victory.
Kohr spent the day jumping back and forth between cars and also drove his blue 1968 Dodge to the $5K Super Pro final against Anthony D’Agostino. Only .008 separated the drivers on the starting line, but unfortunately, Kohr’s Dodge broke in the final, giving D’Agostino the Super Pro victory.
With D’Agostino winning Super Pro and Kohr claiming the Pro title, the two returned for a rematch in the Mini Belt Runoff. This time, Kohr was behind the wheel of his Barracuda again.
Both drivers were sharp on the starting line. D’Agostino posted a .013 reaction time, while Kohr left with a .007 light. The race ended in a double breakout, where D’Agostino was under by .012 more than Kyle, giving Kohr the win light.
With the win, Kyle Kohr became the second Championship Contender in our four-race Big Bobby’s Summer Slam Series, joining our first series’ winner Jon Northrop.
After the main events concluded, we hosted our first Golf Cart Race in several years. Local racer Dave Runge came away with the victory.
The after-hours fun continued inside the Rec Center with a Practice Tree Race, where Hannah Egenberger and Mike Mowday each earned mini checks for their performances.
We hope everyone enjoyed the second race of the Big Bobby’s Summer Slam Series. Maybe one of these weekends, Mother Nature will finally allow us to complete two full days of racing. Fingers crossed!
